Kpong Generating Station Maintenance Team Restores Broken Plant Elevator

The Director of the Hydro Generation Department of the Volta River Authority, Mr. K.B Amoako, has challenged staff of the Authority to put to good use training acquired on the job. Mr. K.B Amoako made the call during the commissioning of a refurbished elevator at the Kpong Generating Station (GS). The refurbishment, which cost Thirty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS 30,000), was done by a team of maintenance engineers at the Kpong GS.

Installed in 1980 during the construction of the station, the elevator, after a period of use, broke down and could not be repaired due to lack of ancillary parts needed to carry out corrective maintenance its electromechanical control system which was no longer being supported by its manufacturer.

Commissioning the repaired elevator, Mr. K.B Amoako said, the idea of modernizing the elevator's controls in-house came from a staff who had been sponsored by the Authority on a foreign training program, and had discussed with Management the feasibility of such an undertaking.

Mr. Amoako reiterated, among other things, the importance of the refurbishment, noting that the repaired elevator will not only facilitate movement within the station, but also spur the maintenance personnel on to execute projects of similar magnitude.

The Plant Manager of the Kpong GS, Mr. Johnson Hlodjie, also lauded the effort of the maintenance team saying the move by the team to put to use the knowledge acquired during their training was a sign that staff training was yielding positive results.

He encouraged staff of the Authority to be bold in taking initiatives that will move the Authority forward, and also urged them to be optimistic about such initiatives.

The ten member multidisciplinary team that carried out the task is made up of Ing. Kwaku Sarpong Mensah, Team Manager and Manager, P&C - Kpong GS; Ing. Benjamin Kittah, Senior Electrical Engineer; Felix Atiogbe, Assistant Electrical Engineer; Jacob Donkor, Senior Technician Engineer; Love Mensah Aryee, Senior Technician Engineer. The rest are Bennett A. Madzah, Senior Technician Engineer; Isaac Ablorh Sowah, Senior Technician Engineer; Eric Dogbey and Richard A. Amoni, both Senior Technician Engineers; and Philip Carl N. Dowuona, a Technician Engineer.

Speaking on behalf of the team, the Team Manager, Ing. Kwaku Sarpong Mensah, expressed gratitude to Management for the support the team had received during the execution of the project. He was also grateful to Hatch Energy of Canada for the supply of materials and for the advisory services they provided to ensure the success of the project.
