.Akosombo Hotels

The Akosombo Hotels Limited was registered as a private limited liability company in 1990 to take over and operate the Volta Hotel with technical assistance from Pullman International Hotels (PIH).

Among the objectives of the company were:.
  • To own, operate and manage hotels;
  • To develop, operate and manage touristic facilities on and around the Volta Lake.
  • To carry on the business of tour promoters, operators, travel agents and contractors.
  • To own and operate pleasure boats as well as transport in connection with the business of the company.

The rehabilitation of the hotel was completed in late 1991 and it was opened as a 3-star international facility with 35 bedrooms (including 4 suites), a  restaurant, a conference room and main bar.

Among the responsibilities of Pullman International Hotels was the provision of the first General Manager of the Hotel until 1994.  A Board of Directors with the VRA Chief Executive as Chairman was also established to manage the affairs of the company.
In 1992, a discotheque (the ADOWA Night Club) as well as the renovated "Privilege House" comprising a 2-bedroom executive lodge were added to the facilities.

In 1994, the parent company of Pullman International Hotels was taken over by the ACCOR Hotel Group of France and as a result, the responsibilities of Pullman International Hotels were transferred in a new technical assistance agreement to the ACCOR Group.

The Hotel was affiliated to the ACCOR Group until December 2001.

In 1996, a new project comprising a double outdoor swimming pool, a double tennis court and a golf practice range was completed to add value to the facilities.  After a reappraisal of patronage of the hotel based on its performance in the first five years of operation, the management re-focussed its attention on the conference market (while not forgetting about the leisure business) in order to fill the bedrooms particularly during the week and off-holiday season.

As the hotel continued to host more and more of such conferences, the need arose for larger conference facilities as the existing ones became too small for the purpose. It therefore became imperative to provide a larger meeting room facility and in 1999, a decision was taken to convert the upper part of the Overlook Point building located near the Swimming Pool and tennis courts into a new conference facility. The hotel is therefore now in a better position to host medium and relatively larger groups of up to about 120 persons (theatre -style seating).
