The activities of the Volta River Authority go beyond its primary function of generation and supply of electrical energy for industrial, commercial and domestic use in Ghana . Being mindful of its social responsibility, the Authority engages in diverse non-power activities to enhance the lives of its employees as well as communities in its operational areas. Notable among these are the VRA schools, hospitals/clinics and subsidiary companies. The Authority also carries out social activities designed to improve the social, economic and physical environment of the lake-side communities. For more informationclick here .
The Authority has schools in Akosombo and Akuse in the Eastern Region of Ghana, as well as Aboadze in the Western Region. These are communities in which the company's hydro electric and thermal plants are located. The schools are mainly to serve the children of employees of the Authority but they also have a large non-VRA student intake. The Akosombo International School, the oldest and largest of the schools, is increasingly gaining recognition as a centre of academic excellence. It comprises nursery, grade, junior and senior secondary schools. These schools prepare students for the Basic and Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations as well as the Cambridge (UK) Ordinary Level Examinations. For more informationclick here.
In its bid to provide high quality health care to its employees and communities in its catchment areas, the Authority operates a hospital in Akosombo, as well as satellite clinics in Aboadze, Accra and Akuse. A large percentage of the overall in and out patient load is derived from the external public from which the Authority obtains direct revenue.
To help improve the health of communities along the Volta Lake, the Authority engages in activities aimed at controlling Schistosomiasis (bilharzia). Frequent screening exercises and education drives are carried out among the population. The Authority also undertakes environmental programmes such as dredging activities at the estuary of the Volta River to reduce the incidence of bilharzia in that area.
The VRA has a medical boat, the ONIPA NUA, with a state of the art medical equipment, and supported by professionals from the Akosombo Hospital that, provides free medical services to the communities along the Volta Lake . For more informationclick here.
