Health Services
The health and well-being of the inhabitant of Akosombo and the lakeside area have been made specific obligations of the Authority under the Act. The Authority runs a well-equipped hospital at Akosombo, and through a Health Services Department it handles matters concerned with sanitation and public health.
In 1990, the Authority commissioned a Medical Boat called ONIPA-NUA to provide basic medical services and public education for the inhabitants of the lakeside area; effect surveillance of communicable diseases among residents of the lakeside communities and support the University of Ghana Medical School in establishing and running Primary Health Care centres in these communities for health care delivery and teaching purposes.
These and other measures taken by the Authority to ensure that the project causes as little adverse effect on the surrounding population as possible.
Environmental Enhancement
Furthermore, the Authority has embarked upon a reforestation programme to check land degradation along the Volta Lake. With the co-operation of local opinion leaders and voluntary groups, the Authority is educating and involving the people living in the towns and villages along the shores of the lake in the fight against environmental degradation. These and other measures are designed to ensure that VRA's projects cause as little adverse effect as possible on the environment and population.
